Dear Reader,

Here is your weekly news overview…

Paedophile to be subjected to compulsory psychiatric treatment

Yesterday, the court in Portimão ordered that a man detained on suspicion of sharing online child pornography be subjected to compulsory psychiatric treatment, in addition to bi-weekly presentations to the authorities.

The 27 year old man, of Portuguese nationality, was also prohibited from using computer equipment, after being interviewed during the first judicial interrogation for the application of coercive measures.

The man was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Tuesday, following a complaint originating from international judicial cooperation mechanisms, via the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

After the complaint, it was found that the suspect “repeatedly accessed, held and shared child pornography content on computer media”, says a statement from the PJ.

Woman rescued by lifeboat at Farol de Alfanzina, Lagoa

Ferragudo lifeguard crew rescued a 65 year old German lady yesterday, after she got knocked over by a wave.

The woman found herself in difficulties after apparently being surprised by a wave while on a tourist boat, next to one of the caves at Farol de Alfanzina, in Lagoa.

The victim was rescued by the crew at the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station after the alarm was raised at 12:15pm yesterday, reporting that a woman was in difficulty on board a maritime-tourist vessel, so the crew from the Salva Station were mobilized to the scene. The local command of the Portimão Maritime Police and an INEM team were also activated.

“Upon arrival at the vessel, the crew at the Lifeguard Station found that the victim, a 65 year old German lady was complaining of back pain, and was transported to the Portimão Marina, where INEM team were waiting, to promptly assist her and transported her to a hospital,” says the National Maritime Authority statement.

Zoomarine to run a local underwater and coastal cleaning initiative, May 19th

Zoomarine are promoting a local underwater and coastal cleaning project in Silves and Albufeira, on May 19th, to remove debris and abandoned fishing gear that jeopardises the survival of various habitats and marine species in the area.

The initiative will take place on the beaches of Armação de Pêra, in Silves and Salgados, in Albufeira, and interested parties are welcome to participate, helping to clean the beach.

The action aims to contribute to the removal of rubbish from the beach and the sea, raising awareness among participants and the Algarve population about combating pollution and protecting the oceans.

Thus, Operation Praia Limpa is divided into two major operations: underwater cleaning and beach cleaning.

For the underwater cleanup, with the support of DiveSpot and BioReefAP, 3 vessels and approximately 15 divers and marine biologists will be used to collect abandoned fishing gear and debris of human origin, along various points of the coast and the crest of the natural reef of the Algarve, over a distance of almost 7 miles in length.

To clean the beach, Zoomarine challenges all Algarve residents and tourists to contribute by signing up through the event's official webpage.

Hugo Brites, Marketing and Communications Director at Zoomarine Algarve says, “we work daily towards the preservation of species and ecosystems, which is why we maintain our commitment to this initiative and invite everyone to participate. We hope to be able to raise awareness among the community about protecting the environment and the oceans, demonstrating the direct impact that human behaviour has, with the removal of debris present in the sea, which directly impacts marine species and habitats.”

In 8 years, Operation Praia Limpa has already contributed to the removal of more than 8 tons of marine litter from Algarve beaches. This year, the objective is to reach at least 10 tons.

Inspired by the “Together We protect” philosophy, Operation Praia Limpa was created in 2017 with the purpose of raising awareness among citizens about the preservation of the coastline, taking into account the purpose of promoting environmental education and animal welfare by the Zoomarine.

The initiative has the support of several local partners: Silves City Council, Albufeira City Council, ALGAR - Recovery and Treatment of Solid Waste, APAL – Albufeira Promotion Agency, BioReefAP, CCDR – Europe Direct Algarve, DiveSpot, Geoparque Algarvensis, ICNF - Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation, IPDJ - Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth and UAlg V+.

Loulé: Man arrested for sexual abuse of 13 year old family member

A 35 year old man has been arrested "on strong evidence of committing crimes against freedom and sexual self-determination, crimes that victimized a minor belonging to his family".

According to the Judicial Police, the facts were reported to the GNR in Loulé by a family member of the victim. The abuse occurred at different times during the year 2023, "inside the house where the attacker and victim lived together, when the victim was only 13 years old", says the police statement.

The investigation allowed the Judiciary Police to collect evidence linked to episodes of sexual assault.

The detainee will be presented to the judicial authorities for first interrogation and application of coercive measures.

Lagoa: Ex-boyfriend who stabbed Joana Nascimento in the neck gets 8 year sentence

Yesterday, the young man accused of stabbing his 25 year old ex-girlfriend, Joana Nascimento, in June 2023 in Lagoa, was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison by the Court of Portimão.

When reading the sentence, the judge considered that the number of years stipulated in the agreement may seem reduced, but explained that the final decision took into account that the death ended up not being caused directly by the blows inflicted by the young man.

“But there was an intention to take her life,” he said.

The Public Prosecutor's Office had requested a 14 year prison sentence for Tiago Souto, aged 22, with the court confirming today the crime of “qualified homicide in the attempted form”.

The facts date back to June 15, 2023, when the man waited for his ex-girlfriend to leave for work and, when she was inside the car, struck her twice in the neck with a razor.

Joana Nascimento received hospital treatment and was discharged on the same day, but was hospitalised again on June 22nd at Portimão Hospital, with a serious infection caused by her injuries.

The victim was transported by helicopter to Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon, where she died on the night of June 23rd, as a result of a post-traumatic abscess, complicated by sepsis, according to the autopsy report.

The judge asked the convict to, “during his stay in prison, meditate on the path he is taking and modify his behaviour, because he is still very young”.

The judge also highlighted the “need to put an end” to a series of “escalating” violent behaviours on the part of the young convict.

The court also ordered the payment of compensation of 5,000 euros to the victim's family.

Vila Real de Santo António: infant school teacher attacked outside the school

A 60 year old infant school teacher at the Stº António 1st cycle school in Vila Real de Santo António, was attacked on Friday at the entrance to the school.

The attackers were reportedly the parents of a child, who were called to school due to the "conflicts that the boy caused".

The teacher was violently attacked, with punches, slaps and hair pulling, and had to be transported by INEM for hospital treatment.

A father who was nearby tried to stop the attacks, but also ended up being attacked. The situation only became calmer when a man on a scooter passing by stopped and managed to calm the situation.

The GNR recorded the incident and interviewed the attackers. Seven people involved in the attacks were identified, "and an iron and a wheel wrench were seized, which were believed to have been used to attack the teacher".

Currency Market Update - 8th May 2024

This morning has seen GBP continue to lose further ground against both The Euro & US Dollar in particular as we lead up to The Bank of England’s rate decision tomorrow. Current feelings within the market are pretty much in line with rates being unchanged, however what we anticipate might move the markets is whether the number of members voting for a cut will have increased from the solitary one member last time, or whether it’ll still be a minority in favour.
