“Various British residents in the Algarve” are considering applying for dual nationality to weather Brexit, British ambassador Kirsty Hayes admitted to Lusa news agency.
It is not a tactic that the embassy deals with, as it is the “responsibility of the Portuguese government”, but it is clearly being seen as a sensible way forwards considering the aftermath of Britain’s exit remains a grey area.
As ambassador Hayes has been assuring Brits in “Brexit surgeries” in Lisbon and the Algarve, as soon as some form of clarity emerges, she will back visiting expat ‘hotspots’, to relay it.
With the embassy’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BritsInPortugal/) open for people to pose questions, Ms Hayes told Lusa that these will help staff prepare the groundwork for answers.
Meantime, algarvedailynews has carried a detailed explanation of what people need to do to apply for dual nationality.
The beauty of the process is that applicants can retain their British passports.
