It was a step back in time for some members of Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) when they were invited to attend a school prize-giving ceremony at Escola EB 2/3 Dr Antonio de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil.
All the pupils were presented with certificates whilst parents, friends and, of course, the Rotary members were treated to several performances by the school’s recorder band, young choristers and David Bejerea a very talented young man on keyboards. The entertainment ended with an accomplished accordion recital performed by 12 year old Inês Faria. The performances were followed by a very special Presentation.
AIRC has for a number of years supported the cookery courses at the school and, more recently, surfing lessons and paddle tennis for some of the children with special needs. “This school has become very important to our club” said Incoming President Claire Busbridge. “This year I wanted to do something special to recognise a pupil who has worked hard and achieved a high standard during his/her time at school”
Current AIRC President Hermes Alberto approached the teachers at Escola Dr Antonio de Sousa Agostinho, who helped select a pupil from among more than 1,000 students from year 1 to year 9 plus students from the vocational courses. The pupil chosen as the best student of 2015/2016 was Rebeca Teresa Gago, a year 9 student. Rebeca was presented with a cheque for 150 euros donated by a club member, together with a plaque commemorating her achievement. “I hope to continue this scheme and make it an annual event” said Claire. “I believe it important to acknowledge and reward pupils who work hard at their studies and are a credit to their school”.
