Yaddo, the digital home of documentaries available in 154 countries, wants to hear from individuals and independent production companies with a great story. They will be offered the opportunity to pitch documentary ideas to Yaddo’s Nick Fraser, documentary luminary and former commissioning editor of BBC Storyville. The campaign spearheads the launch of Yaddo, the new documentary streaming service with films hand-selected by Fraser.
Believing “the best stories are always true”, Yaddo recognises the finest docs are often hard to find, and offers documentary lovers a curated catalogue of outstanding films, both current and classic. Alongside the collection of feature-length documentaries, there are themed monthly Deep Dives on subjects ranging from the sublime to the outrageous; with added flavour from Pop-Ups – quirky clips found on the web. From personal essays to big picture global investigations, the dedicated channel explores the doc universe, guiding viewers to films they may not know, and providing insight from filmmakers themselves, factual film critics, and enthusiastic viewers.
Nick Fraser, Yaddo’s editor, is looking for new, fresh and diverse voices in the documentary field to add to its catalogue of great filmmakers. Fraser is an award-winning journalist whose career has included films such as Man On Wire and Searching For Sugarman – among over 340 others. Prestigious films he has commissioned have won four Oscars, five BAFTAs, 15 Grierson awards, three Peabody awards, and three International Emmys.
“At Yaddo we aim to show the widest possible spectrum of documentaries – from those that have a theatrical release in cinemas to five-minute films made for the internet.” says Fraser. “The only criterion is that they must be brilliant and absorbing.”
If selected by Fraser, Yaddo will provide the support to ensure a documentary idea becomes reality. From over a thousand pitches, Yaddo has already commissioned over 40 engaging, revealing and funny short films from filmmakers around the world. Including contributors from London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town.
