ACCA, the children’s charity that is focused on helping needy kids across the Algarve, topped its record and kitted out 866 youngsters with learning essentials
The growing success of ACCA’s fundraising activities meant that more children than ever before started the new school year with confidence… and the basics that will allow them to take full part in classes, and progress.
Back packs filled with notepads and pencils, erasers, set squares, files, recorders, calculators and compasses were distributed to some 31 organisations from Tavira to Lagos, in a drive to combat the problems that result when children arrive at school with nothing – if a child does not have a pen and a notebook to write in then how can they thrive, learn and advance? This happens in the Algarve still; Almancil, for example, is unable to provide any school needs from its existing budgets.
Contributions from generous individuals and businesses made ACCA’s target achievable and this year’s donations have been exceptional. Among the many who worked tirelessly, and gave willing, for the children included the Central Ladies Lunch Club, Vila Sol Golf Club, Laranjal Golf Club and Four Season Fairways in Quinta do Lago and St Vincent’s Anglican Chaplaincy who shopped, filled bags and delivered them to ACCA pickup points, from where committee members, led by Gwenda Daud, took charge of distribution to schools and social centres.
Some people are enquiring now about donating towards next year’s drive and other ACCA-supported ventures. Bank transfers to IBAN PT50 0079 0000 4342641910 122 are hugely appreciated.
