A true World War 2 veteran was the special guest at the Royal British Legion Dinner celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day last weekend.
Ninety-three years old George Bailey brought the memory of the conflict to life as he spoke a few words in memory of all the comrades he served with in the fighting across Europe.
The celebration dinner, at Lazy Jacks Bar & Grill on Lagos Marina, organised by James and Sue Howe of the Western Area branch of the RBL (Portugal), raised €228 for the Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Afterwards Sue declared: “The turnout was fantastic and guests came from all three branches of the military, Army, Air force and Royal Navy. "
“It was wonderful to have George there as a very special guest and, more importantly, a real link back to the joy of that day in 1945 when victory in Europe was declared after six years of fighting. George enjoyed spending time with other former military personnel of more recent times, and says he hopes to attend a few more Royal British Legion Events here in the Algarve.”
Jo, the owner of Lazy Jacks, was kind enough to provide free for every guest a complimentary drink of champagne & orange Juice and also donated a meal for 2 as a raffle prize.
The next Royal British Legion Western Area Event will be a “Garden Poppy Day Picnic” at the Casa Grande in Burgau, on June 27th, between the hours of 2 – 6 pm. Details are to be published at a later date so watch this space!
