Almost certainly not, but it can make the world of difference to the work of ACCA. Now in its 13th year looking after children in need in the Algarve, the charity continues to seek out members who will support its many activities.
Knowing you can help improve the lives of children in need is hugely rewarding and often it takes no more than small change to make a big difference. By becoming a member of ACCA, your monthly €10 contribution (€120 pa) will add to the charity’s funds which are used to buy specific equipment for disabled youngsters, supply psychological and physical therapies for those with special needs, even nappies and milk for babies from families well below the poverty line. ACCA also pledges to help children who are on the street; even here in the Algarve, there are areas where the standard of housing is frighteningly low and there are children living without water.
Many of us expats have an enviable lifestyle here, and are able to enjoy the facilities and comfort that the Algarve has to offer. But while we can take advantage of sporting opportunities and fine dining, the average salary for an office worker here is just €1,000 per month; others, such as gardeners, pool cleaners and restaurant workers receive half of that, and then often only in the high season. For many families, their income does not cover even basic needs.
ACCA is committed, 365 days a year, to bringing smiles to small faces, and to lightening the load of parents who are unable to cope financially and practically. ACCA members have voting rights and can help decide what projects the charity chooses to support - all that you need to do is commit to €10 a month (even the minimum, €5 a month, would be gratefully received).
