The Algarve History Association has organised history talks, guided walks through Tavira and a concert over the forthcoming weeks. See details below.
History talks
Our next presentation will feature a guest speaker, José Curto, an emeritus don from York University in Toronto. His presentation will cover a period of recent history, and with a Canadian slant. Portuguese emigrants have taken root in many countries around the world, and there are many success stories among them.
José´s presentation will cover the lives of an ordinary family from the Azores, and their struggle to find their feet in their new circumstances of the big cities of Canada. The title of his presentation is: A life in a short frame: the story of Fernanda Tavares.
Our talks are free, and there is opportunity to make a contribution to the running of the Association.
Tuesday 25 March at 18:00 in Lagoa Library; Friday 28 March at 11:00 in Tavira Library.
I shall be organizing a lunch after the Tavira talk - if you wish to lunch with our speaker, Lynne and me, please be in touch.
Guided Walks in Tavira
I have been asked if I can again guide interested members around historic Tavira. In my design, there are three walks: first around the Old Town, the Vila-a-Dentro; second around the growing Medieval Town; and third around the Northern suburb, Além da Ponte, on the other side of the river. Each of them lasts about 90 minutes; and each of them requires an ability to walk for that length of time, with no pauses for resting in cafés. There is a small charge (€5) for each participant.
The possible dates I have in mind for these excursions are as follows, all at 11:00:
Walk 1 - 2 April / 9 April
Walk 2 - 3 April / 10 April
Walk 3 - 16 April
If there is enough interest, I shall run another suite of excursions in mid-May. Please let me know by email if you wish to attend, and I shall let you know the assembly point.
Concert
The next concert in our 2024/2025 series will take place on 13 April at 17:00. Its title is Opera Rebels, and our performers will be Ana Carmen Balestra (soprano); Rosa Herwig (mezzo soprano); accompanied by Julius Backer at the piano. The concert will include duets, and arias from operas, together with chansons and songs from musicals. Featured composers are Bizet, Vivaldi, Piazzolla, Jacques Brel and Wim Sonneveld.
Reservations cost €30 and should be made through peterbooker1347@gmail.com.
