The smile of the rider says it all: pride, achievement, and a happy time. This made it all worthwhile for the many volunteers, associations, councils and local businesses who made it possible to put on the 2nd Special Olympics in the Algarve, organised by Cândida Pereira of AAPACDM, Faro, and Bev Gibbons of Pinetrees Riding Centre, Almancil.
Special Olympics Equestrian is the fastest growing section of Special Olympics Portugal, and destined for Portuguese children and adults with learning disabilities. They may also have physical impairment.
This regional event attracted a total of 34 riders from 6 different schools or institutions. However it also ticked the box for tourism as a team from Sporting Clube de Ourém came down with their trainer Ricardo and spent two days in the Algarve, which for some of the team was their first visit to the Algarve and a taste of our hospitality.
All the schools had made a great effort to kit their representatives out in all the proper gear, and dressing up for special events is all part of the fun.
The competition was held on the 5th May but the Algarve weather was, for once, unusual and the heavens opened causing everyone to get a soaking. With 10 riders still to compete it was decided to return on May 19th and continue for the remaining riders. The second time was perfect Algarve sunshine. After the riding tests were concluded everyone enjoyed a celebratory cake from local Pastelaria Charlotte, juice and sparkling wine for the adults, before the medal ceremony and finally the National Anthem.

Representative of the Special Olympic Portugal committee Pedro Serra came down on both occasions from Lisbon, and said that the Almancil event was well organised and with great team work.
Local sponsors of the events – Rood Construction, Mapro Real Estate, Pinetrees Riding Centre and some private donations made the events financially possible.
Many of the volunteers were foreigners who live here all year round, or have holiday homes, and contribute to the fabric of the local community.
Loulé Council was very supportive with the logistics and Vereador Sr. João Martins was present to help distribute medals and meet the participants. President of the Junta of Almancil, Sr. Joaquim Pinto, also popped in and was greeted with hugs from local riders. Many thanks are due to the São Bras Council who contributed financially to assist with the transport of Judges Kathryn Watson and Pedro Ferro.
At this event the Algarve riders were being selected to represent the Algarve at the national championship competition to be held in Lisbon on June 2nd. The chosen ones will be experiencing a couple of days in the big city. Life is full of challenges!
