What is "Physical Therapy"?

What is a "Physical Therapy"?Physical Therapist David Murphy has just set up a Physical Therapy clinic in Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimao.
He has been working for 10 years in Ireland in a very busy clinic treating all Musclo-Skeletal and nerve issues, with many new and different state of the art techniques associated and required to alleviate and resolve many long and short term Muscular /Joint complaints.

What is "Physical Therapy"?

Physical Therapy is a hands on treatment using techniques such as Myofascial release/deep tissue massage, dry needling, Graston technique and many other techniques to alleviate pain in joints and muscles from such disorders as Sciatica, Fibromyalgia, Plantar fasciitis, Lumbar pain, frozen shoulder, as well as chronic or acute sprains, and strains.

Physical therapists can initially treat the issue and pain and then teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition after treatment, so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability in the long term.

What is a "Physical Therapy"?Why choose Physical Therapy?

No one wants to live in pain. But no one should put their health at risk in an effort to be pain free.
Since 1999, Patients have increasingly been prescribed opioids—painkillers like Vicodin, OxyContin, Opana, and methadone, and combination drugs like Percocet.
In some situations, dosed appropriately, prescription opioids are an appropriate part of medical treatment. However, opioid risks include depression, overdose, and addiction, plus withdrawal symptoms when stopping use.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging health care providers to reduce the use of opioids in favour of safe alternative treatments such as physical therapy.
Don't just mask the pain. Treat it!.
Choose physical therapy to manage your pain without the risks and side effects of painkillers.

Does it hurt?

A healthy muscle feels very little discomfort when being worked on, however the issue that’s underlying could be deeper with in the Fascia/secondary muscle so you may feel a little discomfort during or after the treatment for a day or so , but most people have a perspective on pain, especially if they have had it long term. The initial discomfort is small in comparison to the relentless nagging pain that occurs on a daily basis.

What is the difference between Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy education focuses primarily on hands-on treatment within the Muscular, Skeletal and Nerve networks and systems, whereas electrical modalities and Hospital care and more hands off approach have long been a mainstay of Physiotherapy. They are both equally necessary at times of ill health and we constantly cross refer patients to each other who would benefit from the hands of approach or the expertise of Physiotherapy in say long term rehabilitation or ongoing treatment for a specific condition like paralysis and many long term disabilities.

Who can benefit from Physical Therapy?

Almost anyone experiencing a variety of pain problems including, but not limited to:

Acute/Chronic joint injuries
Arthritis
Headaches
Neck/Back pain
Knee pain and Tendinitis
Muscle Spasm
Frozen Shoulder
Sciatica & Hip Bursitis
Hip/Knee pain
Muscle strains
Fibromyalgia
Tennis/Golfer's Elbow"
Overuse injuries

What are the techniques I will receive during a session of Physical Therapy?

I personally use any one or a combination of treatments such as Graston technique, Dry needling, Trigenics, Deep tissue massage depending on the issue. You are only charged for the time of 45 minutes regardless of how many techniques I use on the day.

A short explanation of the treatments are as follows:

Dry Needling Method of releasing painful trigger points and associated toxins with in a contracted knot/adhesion of a muscle that cause most associated and referred back, shoulder and leg pain. (dry needling).

Graston Technique Method of releasing long term adhesions in muscles and fascia using stainless steel tools to realign the fascial structure of the muscle and surrounding tissue. (See www.grastontechnique.com)

Trigenics Technique A Nerve restoration treatment system that resets the way the brain communicates with the body to instantly relieve pain, accelerate healing on an injury/issue and strengthen muscles exponentially to ensure you get back the posture and pain free stance in day to day life. (www.trigenics.com)

Deep tissue Sports Massage  – Method of Deep tissue massage and manipulation of tissue used for sports and non-sports people to maintain the balance of all the muscles needed for competition and everyday life.

Are there any side effects to Physical Therapy?

Side effects are rare but may vary among individuals. Typically, only mild muscle soreness is apparent for about 2 days after treatment. Consensus is generally worth any discomfort short term for the long term gains you get out of the technique.
