Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016, published in the OJEU on 4 May 2016 is applicable from 25 May 2018.
This Regulation repeals previous Directive 95/46/EC (and, as a consequence, most of our Portuguese Law 67/98 of 26 October).
The main objectives are to:
· update legislation approved more than 20 years ago, i.e., before the widespread use of the Internet and the digital revolution
· to protect customer information and the rights of the individuals
Algarve Daily News manages its databases and analysed how they are used. This was to identify any weaknesses in protecting readership data.
The only data held byAlgarve Daily News is for
1. The opt-in newsletter list and
2. Those registering and placing Classified ads
Under the new regulation, ‘consent’ means “any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her.”
The processing of persona data help byAlgarve Daily News is limited to running a weekly mailing to readers and those accepting and confirming data from those wishing to use the free classified advertising service.
Consent is given by readers who each have added their own details to the Subscribe field on the home page of www.algarvedailynews.com.
Each weekly mailing includes an opt-out option, clearly stated at the end of the newsletter. All such notifications received from readers are acted on within a week and the data held is deleted from the database. This is in accordance with the ‘Right to be Forgotten’ clause in the new legislation.
The data bases are managed by Algarve Daily News Data Protection Manager, a qualified technology expert. The Controller of the data is Algarve Daily News.
