The Algarve region in Portugal has been crowned ‘World’s Leading Beach Destination’ for 2024 at the prestigious World Travel Awards, solidifying its status as a global hotspot for stunning coastlines and high-quality tourism.
Stretching 200 kilometres on Portugal’s southern and western coasts, the Algarve boasts 100 breathtaking beaches.
The region’s commitment to quality and sustainability is evident, with 86 Algarve Blue Flag beaches, recognised for water quality, safety, cleanliness, and diverse services.
The Algarve also leads in accessibility, offering 47 beaches equipped for all visitors.
Additionally, 13 beaches have been rated as Zero Pollution by the sustainability group ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável.
President of the Algarve Tourism Bureau, André Gomes, spoke on the award: “We have won Europe’s Leading Beach Destination 10 times, but to win the World’s Leading Beach Destination is another level altogether when you consider the number of countries that have great beaches.”
The Algarve has plenty more on offer than just the coastline. The quality of life in the region is very high, with an affordable cost of living, a thriving luxury property market, and a warm climate.
André Gomes, continued: “Our coastline and proximity to the sea has influenced our culture and gastronomy. Beyond the beaches, visitors can enjoy the freshest seafood that can be enjoyed in everything from small quayside eateries to Michelin-starred restaurants.”
The Central Algarve is evolving rapidly, with destinations such as Carvoeiro and Ferragudo emerging as hotspots for affluent families and entrepreneurs relocating to Portugal while still maintaining the area’s authentic feel.
Luxury new home developments are popping up in the Central Algarve, such as Quinta Heights, offering a luxury lifestyle with its unparalleled ocean and mountain views, as well as wellness facilities and on-site restaurant or rooftop cocktail and tapas bar.
Philip Button is managing director of Brookes Property Group and he explains: “We just launched our Quinta Heights development in Ferragudo, in the Central Algarve and have already sold 25% off-plan to international investors and affluent families.
“The Central Algarve area offers so much in terms of lifestyle, views, authentic culture, local produce and sunshine. Having worked internationally for 20 years in luxury real estate in Florida, the Bahamas, Antigua, and the UK, we identified this area of Portugal as the one with the most to offer. It’s the whole package.”
Paul Stannard, Chairman and Founder of Portugal Pathways, says: “We are seeing a massive uptick in interest for the Central Algarve
“Expats are drawn to its unspoiled natural beauty, as well as its thriving real estate market, which has seen luxury property values in the Central Algarve increase 10.9% in 2024.”
A Year-Round Destination
The Algarve’s appeal extends beyond summer, with its beaches and mild climate offering excellent opportunities for exploration during autumn and winter.
