Adverse conditions and strong currents are hampering operations with the Maritime Police unable to get close to the area where a missing diver was thought to be fishing.
The Lisbon man, who has lived in the Algarve for two years, disappeared about a week ago after he drove to the south-western point of Portugal.
The warning was given to the authorities by neighbors who noticed that José Teixeira had not returned home.
According to the neighbors, "he was very knowledgeable and knew the sea as well as anyone," however his car has been found in the vicinity and there is no sign of its owner.
The Maritime Police started to search for Teixeira yesterday but faced poor seas conditions and strong currents so any kind of sea-based search in the area where he was thought to have been was too dangerous to continue.
With deteriorating weather arriving from the west over the next few days, it is unlikely that Maritime Police will resume searches until conditions allow.
