The Judicial Police in Portimão have arrested a 49-year-old man who had "numerous files, images and videos of child pornography stored on various computer media."
The detainee also is alleged to have been involved in sharing images and videos relating to the sexual abuse of children.
The detainee, resident in Lagos, will today be up before the judicial authorities for questioning and to hear whether he will be allowed bail or is to remain in custody pending prosecution.
Another way in which the Internet is being abused is for men to be persuaded to unzip in front of a webcam and then blackmailed.
Attractive and seductive sirens, whom these men have met in Internet chat rooms, wait for an indeterminate length of time before sending a notice saying that the man’s personal activities have just been recorded and copies will be sent to friends and family unless a payment is made.
The Judicial Police coordinator charged with tacking the rise in this crime, Carlos Cabreiro, said that at least 60 cases a day are being reported in Lisbon alone, and suggests that people should “not to expose themselves in this manner.”
