A train crash in northern Portugal this afternoon left one person dead and nine injured.
The accident occurred on the northern line in the Santarém Valley which was blocked in both directions.
The train was derailed following a collision with a HGV carrying a digger. The crash happened at the Asseca Bridge crossing, five kilometers from Santarém train station (pictured).
The local District Relief Operations Center reported that the lorry driver was killed and nine passengers were slightly injured.
A railway spokesman said that the accident involved the 16:45 service on the Lisbon - Tomar route and the accident has been at around 18:00 pm
There are 15 vehicles and 28 operational units from several fire brigades at the site which has yet to be cleared (as at 19:46.)
