Sir Nick Faldo has led winners at the World Golf Awards Gala Ceremony 2016 at the Algarve’s Conrad Hotel, taking the prestigious title of Golf Course Designer of the Year.
Quinta do Lago took the title of Europe's Best Golf Venue and Portugal was voted the best golf destination in the world.
Votes were received from professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry including senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents, media professionals and members of the public.
The voting works on a first-past-the-post system to ensure impartiality and independence.
Hundreds of thousands of votes were cast ahead of the Gala Ceremony at the Conrad.
World Golf Awards Managing Director Christopher Frost commented, “The third instalment of the World Golf Awards has been the most successful to date, welcoming industry leaders to the Algarve for a weekend of golf, networking opportunities and our fabulous Gala Ceremony.
“It has been an honour to recognise so many world-class organisations here this evening and I offer my sincere congratulations to all our winners.”
Event partner Quinta do Lago again offered World Golf Awards guests a chance to enjoy its three award-winning championship golf courses – the South Course, Laranjal and the North Course, which was co-designed by Beau Welling and European Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley.
"Portugal will continue to work on attracting new segments (professionals from teaching golf courses, corporate, women and young people) and supporting what is a reference event: Portugal Masters, already scheduled for September 21 to 24 2017 ", emphasized the president of Turismo de Portugal, Luís Araújo.
There are currently 91 golf courses in Portugal (of which 66 have 18 or 27 holes). The Algarve has 44% of the national total, followed by Lisbon with 17.6%.
