Fresh wave of eastern Europeans finding work in Britain

croppickersA marked increased has been demonstrated in the number of people from eastern Europe working in the UK since the Brexit referendum.

At the same time, there was a drop in numbers from France, Germany and other western European countries, according to the Office for National Statistics data released on Wednesday.

The ONS said the number of eastern Europeans working in Britain increased by 46,000 between June and September, bringing the total to 1,053,000.

Alongside the 46,000 increase, however, there was a drop of 8,000 people in work who had come from Bulgaria and Romania.

The numbers who hail from western Europe working in the UK dropped by 7,000 to 937,000.

The data provides the first indication that the vote to leave the EU has brought about a rush from eastern Europeans to find jobs in the UK before any barriers come down while those from the west appear to be showing greater hesitancy in remaining or taking up work in Britain.

Despite the arrival of newcomers seeking jobs, the unemployment rate fell to 4.8% in September, the lowest it has been since September 2005, according to figures released separately by the ONS.

The total number of Brits working in the UK stood at 28.39 million while the total of non-nationals rose to 3.49 million – just shy of 11% of the workforce – in the 12 months to this September, the ONS revealed.
