Portugal doubles number of Michelin 'two star' restaurants

vilajoyaPortugal has won two new ‘two-star’ ratings in the 2017 edition of the Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal, and seven new ‘one star’ distinctions.

The Yeatman (Vila Nova de Gaia) and Il Gallo d'Oro (Funchal) each now boast a 'two star' rating, joining Ocean in Porches and Vila Joya in Albufeira (pictured).

Michelin highlights the "exceptional growth" in ‘one star’ distinctions in Portugal, awarded to seven new establishments in the 2017 edition, "which demonstrates how the gastronomic level in Portugal is growing."

In total, there are 21 Portuguese restaurants listed in the guide for next year: five with two stars and sixteen with one star, representing seven new entrances since the 2016 edition was printed, (three restaurants with two stars and 11 with one star).

The results were announced at a presentation ceremony for the ‘Michelin Guide Spain and Portugal 2017’ which was held in Girona, Catalonia, with around 400 guests, including chefs, businessmen and government officials, and more than 100 journalists.

Portugal has no ‘three star’ restaurant yet, this being awarded to establishments offering 'cuisine of an exceptional level, which justifies the trip.’

Spain has a glut of three star restaurants with next year's Michelin Guide noting the Lasarte in Barcelona, which joins eight other top restaurants in Spain.

In the ‘Michelin Guide Spain and Portugal 2017’ there are nine restaurants with three stars, 28 with two stars - five of which are in Portugal - and 166 with one star, 16 of which are in Portugal.
