The World Travel Awards, recently hosted in the Maldives, saw Portugal win four of the 31 categories, two awards being for hotels in the Algarve.
The Conrad Algarve and Vila Vita Parc were voted among the best hotels in the world in two different categories.
The Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago was recognised for the fourth time as the World's Leading Luxury Leisure Resort, with Vila Vita Parc in Armação de Pêra receiving the distinction of the World's Leading Luxury Green Resort for the second consecutive year.
"It is with pride and satisfaction that we see two hotels in the Algarve region distinguished in the Oscars of world tourism: recognition for the work and investment made by operators and regional tourism agents in the promotion of a service of excellence that make the Algarve an internationally recognised tourist destination. To these distinctions are added many others - recently the Algarve was voted Best Golf Destination in the World – all of which are a source of pride for the whole region," said Desidério Silva, president of the Algarve tourist board.
The other two awards for Portugal were for Madeira, the ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’ and Parques de Sintra which won ‘World’s Leading Conservation Company.’
The World Travel Awards organisers say their brand is the ultimate hallmark of quality and was set up in 1993 to “acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.”
The award for the Conrad Algarve was announced by General Manager, Joachim Hartl, at his leaving party on Tuesday evening, December 6th, attended by staff and a guests drawn from 'the great and the good' in the Algarve community.
Katharina Schlaipfer was introduced as Joachim Hartl's highly talented replacement who looks forward to taking over full-time in January when Joachim takes on the role of regional manager for Iberia looking after the Conrad brand in Spain and Portugal from a base in Barcelona.
