Portugal has provided four wines in the worldwide Top 100 wines, according to Wine Spectator. One of them, Dão's Quinta de Cabriz 2014, was the cheapest on the list, selling at under €10.
The Dão region lead Portugal’s winners but unlike in the 2014 result, none made the top ten for the year.
In 46th position was Quinta de Cabriz 2014, a Dão wine costing just over €9 and described by Kim Marcus, the renowned editor of the Wine Spectator, as having "concentrated tastes of dark cherry, roasted plum and dried raspberry."
The remaining three Portuguese winners are all from Alto Douro Vinhateiro, which recently celebrated 15 years of classification as a World Heritage Site.
At number 50 is the Evel 2014 red (at about €12) from Real Companhia Velha, which in 2016 celebrated 260 years of winemaking.
The Carm Reserva 2012, at around €20 a bottle, was in 69th position, and was considered "soft and rich with a creamy touch."
Next was the Lemos & van Zeller Quinta Vale D. Maria 2013 at €64 a bottle which won 80th place in the top 100.
The number one wine was from the Napa Valley in the US, the Lewis Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013.
