How two ambulances managed to get involved in a serious accident in Castro Marim on the IC27 remains to be explained but the five vehicle crash left at least five people injured and blocked the road for hours.
One of the victims was said to be seriously injured as four light vehicles including two ambulances, and a heavy goods vehicle collided at around noon today on the IC27 in the Azinhal area.
The accident led to traffic being cut in both directions while the injured were taken away for treatment, the vehicles removed and the road cleaned.
According to the District Relief Operations Center, a warning was issued at 12.06, “two of the vehicles were ambulances, one from the Red Cross and the other from the Alcoutim bombeiros.”
The seriously injured person was evacuated by a Civil Protection helicopter to Faro hospital.
Bombeiros, emergency ambulance teams, the GNR and the air ambulance service were involved in the incident with 16 rescue and support vehicles.
