Car manufacturing giant Volkswagen has become the world’s leading car seller.
VW sales in 2016 outpaced those of Japan’s Toyota which been the top seller for the last four years.
It is the first time that the Germany company has been number one and comes amidst a period of multiple lawsuits, large payouts and car recalls as a result of its emission cheating scandal.
Last year Toyota sold 10,175,000 vehicles around the world but VW was ahead with sales of 10,310,000. VW’s breakthrough was boosted by a 3.8% increase in sales, fuelled in part by demand for its vehicles in China.
In addition to VW-branded cars, the company also produces the Audi, Porsche and Skoda brands.
