One person died and two were badly injured in the early morning on Sunday when two cars collided on the notorious EN125 near Estômbar, Lagoa.
According to brief information the official Civil Protection website, the collision took place at 04:35 and the victim died at the scene.
In the rescue operation, 24 volunteer firefighters and security force personnel, were backed up by specialist vehicles and took three hours to attend to the drivers and passengers, clear the weackage and reopen the road. The deceased and the injured were taken to Portimão’s Barlavento Hospital.
This accident occurred not far from another on Wednesday which resulted in 7 injuries in a crash on the Ponte Nova bridge.
This year already is looking like it will be one of the worst ever in terms of accidents and deaths on the Algarve’s roads.
According to the National Road Safety Authority report, in the first two months of this year, 1,299 accidents were recorded on the Algarve’s roads, the highest figure in the last three years with 7 dead (5 more than in the same period last year) and 16 injured.
Nationally, accidents on Portugal's roads left 73 people dead in the period between 1 January and 28 February, compared to 72 in the same period of last year, according to figures issued by the National Road Safety Authority.
