Theresa May calls snap general election for June 8th

The 4801British electorate has an opportunity to vote in a general election called today by Theresa May for June 8th.

The British premiere called the snap election in a move to give her support in driving through the Brexit process as the UK leaves the European Union.

Divorce talks started three weeks ago and the Prime Minister has lacked domestic support, especially from the House of Lords and some rumbling back-benchers, and said she has called the general election “reluctantly” and that the vote will be all about her endorsement, “The decision facing the country will be all about leadership.”

In March, general election rumours were quashed but recent opinion polls have shown a rise in support for the Conservative Party, due mainly to a collapse in the credibility of Labour under Jeremy Corbin who says he supports the General Election plan.

May took over from David Cameron, seeks to be voted into office in her own right and wants a greater conservative majority for her Repeal Bill which takes many EU laws and slides them into United Kingdom legislation in one go.

The FT reports, “The Lib Dems, which had a disastrous 2015 election, could rebound in the south-west and in Remain-supporting areas. Mrs May would hope that any losses would be more than offset by big Tory gains against a crippled Labour party in the Midlands and north. The SNP, which has called for a second independence referendum by mid-2019, could use the election to win a new mandate for such a vote. An election comes as Northern Ireland remains in political turmoil, following the failure of the main unionists and nationalist parties to come to a power-sharing deal. Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish first minister, accused Mrs May of “once again putting the interests of her party ahead of those of the country.””

Donald Tusk, the European Council president, said that a UK general election would not alter his preparations for Brexit which in any case are on go-slow due to the forthcoming German and French elections.
