New mining areas identified in the Algarve and Alentejo

riotintoNew areas in the Algarve and Alentejo containing copper, lead and nickel in have been identified.

The discovery was made possible by a European study which has enabled an update to be made of Portugal’s mineral resources log.

The information was provided by Teresa Ponce de Leon, head of the National Laboratory for Energy & Geology who said the main discoveries in the Alentejo and Algarve regions are along the Iberian Pyrite belt, i.e. the main mining region in southwestern Europe .

de Leon commented that the identification of new mineral-rich sites has allowed an update to be made of the Alentejo and Algarve mining register.

From this new document the National Laboratory of Energy & Geology aims "to provide updated information to investors and will support the mining industry already here in planning their campaigns for the exploration of metallic minerals and energy."

"We update the knowledge and identify new target areas that will be capable of attracting investment for new exploration," concludes Teresa Ponce de Leon.
