Four people were drowned over the weekend at Farol beach, a pool in Tavira, and off the coast in the Lagos area.
A 48-year-old man drowned and died at Praia do Farol beach on the Ria Formosa island of Culatra and a 76-year-old man was found unconscious in a residential pool in the Tavira area and taken to hospital in critical condition.
Both incidents happened at around 5.00 p.m. on a very hot afternoon.
According to the commander of the Captaincy of Olhão, Nunes Ferreira, the man who lost his life on the beach of the Farol, "entered the sea to fetch an inflatable boat in an unguarded zone where there was a strong current.
“While he was swimming, he disappeared from the view of the people on the beach and was washed onto the seashore a little while later, already dead.
“Resuscitation was performed for about an hour, with no success.
In Tavira, in the Prego area, an elderly man was found unconscious in a pool at a villa. He was assisted by firemen and the emergency ambulance team, who transported him to the hospital in Faro where he remains in a serious condition.
On Monday morning, the lifeless bodies of a man and a woman in their 50s were spotted in the sea off the Lagos coastline.
The woman’s body was spotted floating off Porto de Mós beach and the man's body later was recovered off Canavial beach.
