New international health insurance available

stethascopeAviva health insurers will launch a new scheme to allow expat customers to keep their insurance cover when they are in another country.

Its new international medical policy, Aviva claims, will allow policyholders to cross national boundaries without paying full "globetrotter" premiums.

The USA and the Caribbean, however, are not included.

It says its International Solutions plans will "make mobility between countries easier for customers and provide them with wider cover around the world".

Premiums will be charged based on the zone in which the policy is primarily based, as well as customer’s age.

According to a spokesperson, “Someone residing in Spain will pay a lower premium than someone in Hong Kong as the assumption is they are most likely to receive their treatment in Spain or Europe, but they are still covered if they are on assignment in the Far East and need medical treatment."

All customers, no matter which zone applies, will find that emergencies are covered for up to 60 days in any country.

Aviva is also to expand its cover to include cancer, including palliative care, and organ transplant and home nursing.

Dental cover, alternative therapies and compassionate travel in a family emergency can be added on to a customer’s policy.

Aviva is the UK’s largest insurer providing policies for some 14 million people.
