After five years of missed opportunity to restore the Pego do Inferno beauty spot in the Tavira countryside, the mayor has announced that repairs ‘may start later this week’ but, anyway, are scheduled for August, thus missing another summer season.
The wreckage left after the fire, that destroyed the access walkways and bridge to the inland waterfall and pool, already have been removed by council workers and personnel from Tavira Verde, a municipal company.
In the absence of a distinct lack of council intervention, nature has re-greened the area and the mayor says that a contract now has been awarded to a company, although he won’t say which one, to rebuild the access routes.
"The timber structures will be replaced," said Botelho, adding that the start of the work will be “very soon and may even begin during this first week of the month.”
Until the work is done, the council claims that access to the much loved site is dangerous and suggests that people continue to go elsewhere, as they have done since 2012.
The mayor is adamant that Pego do Inferno is not a bathing area, despite having been used as such for countless generations, saying earlier this year that, "it is an environmentally sensitive place and it should not be overused because of its quality and sustainability. We have to find a solution that can accommodate use and take care of the impact this will have."
