Portugal’s GNR military has seized €430,000 in cash from a Chinese citizen at the border in Caia, Elvas.
The man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, bring more than €10,000 in cash into the country and attempting to bribe his way out of trouble.
According to a statement from the GNR, the 47-year-old man was detained on Thursday, August 3rd, by GNR personnel of the Elvas Territorial Detachment during a routine surveillance action.
"The GNR approached a vehicle as it entered national territory. Inside the vehicle there was a suitcase containing about €430,000 in bundles of €50 notes."
The money was seized and in the course of the investigation, the suspect "tried to bribe the GNR to be allowed to continue to travel with the money."
Since the beginning of this year, the Portuguese and Spanish authorities have seized more than €1.3 million in cash at this one border crossing from five Chinese nationals.
