Over 100 hundred workers at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Vilamoura have yet to receive their Christmas subsidy pay for 2013, according to their trade union, the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores da Industria de Hotelaria, Turismo, Restaurantes e Similares do Algarve (STIHTRSA).
The regional union coordinator, Tiago Jacinto, explained that there are more than 100 employees at the Crown Plaza Hotel that have not yet received their contracted payment and that he has requested as a matter of urgency a meeting with the hotel administration.
The hotel management may be none too pleased that the media has been alerted before the meeting which is scheduled for February 4th.
Besides the missing Christmas payment, the workers also want their salaries increased by "3%, with a minimum of €30 euros a month extra for all workers," as they have not has a pay rise for several years.
"Given the positive developments in the hotel sector, there is no reason why employers continue to blame the crisis," according to the union rep.
This is not an isolated incident as other top hotels in the Algarve recently have been criticised for not paying their staff, some since last October, blaming the crisis when in fact occupancy levels have been high.
