Two drivers died in a road accident that resulted in the busy IC1 being cut in both directions at Santana da Serra, just over the Algarve border in the Alentejo region.
The head-on collision between two passenger cars instantly killed the two drivers, a man and a woman.
One female passenger was seriously injured and has been taken to Beja hospital.
The man who died was 74-years-old and the woman was 55. Their bodies have been taken to the Medical-Legal and Forensic Office of the Baixo Alentejo at Beja hospital.
The accident happened on the southbound carriageway of the IC1 at Santana da Serra but both carriageways were cut off as emergency services attended the scene.
