Silves council gets behind local wine producers

vinesMarking the ‘European Day of Wine Tourism, Silves council is launching a new brochure, ‘Vinhos de Silves,’ which features the county’s eight wine-makers.

This updated offering gives visitors contact details and helps to brand the municipality as a wine growing area in which producers constantly have been improving.

"Wine is much more than just a way of nourishing ourselves or transforming the grapes into a lasting product," said Silves mayor, Rosa Palma, "Wine production is truly part of our culture, as well as being an important source of wealth, both for agriculture and for tourism, since many travellers come to certain territories to taste wines and see the work that goes on in the background.

"We must also bet on the Algarve and on Silves in the promotion of this product which is showing more and more quality and now is recognised internationally. Wine is part of our identity and is a heritage to be defended and publicised, so the brochure, Vinhos de Silves, is important and will be a valuable tool in the promotion of our territory.”

The ceremony on November 12th at the Café Castelo, will honour Silves producers as the council wants to highlight their commitment, dedication and professionalism.

During this event, a new book, ‘Territórios Vinhateiros,’ will be launched. This has been edited by the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities for its 10th anniversary and contains descriptions of the part played by producers in the 77 member municipalities.

Silves has the highest number of wine producers in the Algarve region, eight in total, with many winning top prizes in international competitions.

On October 20th to 22nd, following the success of the 2016 Wine Market, many of the Algarve’s wine producers returned to the exhibition in Lisbon under the heading, "Small producers, Great discoveries."

The Algarve Wine Commission took space and invited member producers to participate in the fair.

The eight businesses that attended were Quinta do Francês, Convento Do Paraíso, Monte do Além, Quinta da Malaca, Morgado do Quintão, Marchalégua/Borges da Silva, Paxá Wines and Cabrita Wines.

"All these participants were unanimous in considering the CVA's initiative to bring together several producers in an area dedicated to the Algarve, which was very positive because it not only made it possible to reduce costs at the event, but also helped to reinforce the region's overall image", said the Commission.
