A grant of €200,000 was approved by Monchique council this week and will be paid monthly to the volunteer firefighting service.
The money will ensure the operation and readiness of the Bombeiros throughout the year. The sum may be topped up if there are any severe forest fires this summer.
"In addition, this year and before the summer, the council will give the Bombeiros a new vehicle to fight forest fires. This has been requested and is being prepared for delivery" said the President of Monchique council, Rui André who rapidly is attaining cult status.
"Civil protection is a strategic area of our political activity. Being prepared means we can cope with fires as and when they occur. This annual support ensures the proper functioning of the Bombeiros. Monchique depends on security and good coordination between civil protection agencies. This has happened."
