On Tuesday afternoon in Tavira the police nabbed three drug traffickers who were about to transfer 800 kilos of hashish from a boat to a lorry in a nearby warehouse.
The Judicial Police commented that, after examining the boat "it contained hidden inside the hull about 800 kg of hashish." The drugs had been inserted through a small trapdoor which had been sealed with silicone.
The police arrested the men and seized "two all terrain vehicles, the boat and trailer, plus €800, several mobile phones, a satellite phone and several GPS devices."
According to police intelligence the three men belong to an organisation that operates in Portugal and Spain, and police said that there soon would be more arrests in both countries.
According to Luís Mota Carmo of the PJ, the organisation had been using Portugal as a gateway for the drugs for onward shipment to Spain where it would have been sold wholesale, destined for northern European markets.
The drugs seized would have been sold on for around €1 million.
