Driver dies as Portuguese minibus crashes in Spain

GuadiaCivilTraficoA Portuguese-registered minibus collided with a truck in Salamanca on Sunday. It was transporting a group of family and friends who worked in France and were heading back to Portugal.

The driver of the minibus, Renato Resende, 28, from Leiria, died and the seven occupants from Leiria and Peniche were injured.

The victims were family and friends who had been working for a maintenance company in France, near the border with Luxembourg, according to José Luís Carneiro, the Secretary of State for Communities.

One of the injured, aged 20, is in critical condition but the others are out of danger, said Carneiro, adding that one of them had undergone a hip surgery.

The Portuguese collided with a truck on the A-62 early on Sunday morning in the Spanish municipality of Robliza de Cojos. The two people in the Romanian-registered truck were unharmed.

Police stated that Resende's body was around 300 metres from the accident site, leading them to believe he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The body of the driver will be autopsied, but it is premature to estimate the date of the transfer of the corpse to Portugal, Carneiro added.
