Portugal’s coastline is to receive a battering as a warning of five metre waves has been issued by the weather service.Ten districts in the country are subject to a yellow category warning until Saturday due to the high seas.
According to the IPMA, the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja and Faro are under a yellow warning from Wednesday, until 02:00 on Saturday, with waves measuring 4 to 5 metres.
Many harbours are closed because of the sea conditions with others allowing passage to boats only over a certain size.
The IPMA also placed the Guarda district on a yellow warning last night due to heavy snowfall.
The yellow warning is the second most severe on a scale of four, and applies in situations "at risk for certain activities depending on the weather situation".
The IPMA predicts for the north and central regions, overcast skies and periods of welcome rainfall in the Minho and Douro Litoral, with snow in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela.
The minimum temperatures will vary between 4ºC in Guarda and 10ºC in Lisbon and Oporto. The maximum will vary between 8ºC in Guarda and 18ºC in balmy Santarém. Faro should hit 16 º today.
