The work to modernise and improve services along Monte Gordo’s beach front is progressing well with some areas able to be fully functional in March and all concession areas open by the start of the tourist season. According to Conceição Cabrita, the Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, "6 of the 18 new concessions already are under construction, so the progress is frankly positive and soon we will have a totally refurbished beach area.”
This building follows the demolition of the old bars and restaurants last December. These are being replaced by standardised buildings connected to the walkway and all linked in to new drainage and water supply.
"The goal is to have the beach one hundred percent functional at the start of the coming bathing season. I am proud to be able to say that this is the largest urban and environmental requalification operation ever carried out in our county," said Cabrita.
The original owners of the restaurants and bars now have new concessions on a permanent basis rather than having to apply each year which made the whole business rather precarious and did not encourage investment.
The three kilometre wooden walkway along the beach at Monte Gordo is the largest of its kind in the eastern Algarve and cost a million euros. The footbridge, access and restaurant construction will end up costing another €12 million.
