One of Faro football club’s first team forwards, Octávio Alexandre Leal Barros, has been stabbed outside a bar in Largo do Cinema, Vilamoura.The alert was given around 05:15 this morning after the sportsman, known by his nickname Tavinho, or Little Wolf, was stabbed twice, once in the neck.
Hours before the attack, in a highly charged local derby, SC Faro beat Olhão’s team, 2-1, and thus qualified for the play-off to climb to the second league.
Tavinho, aged 24, was rushed to hospital and is in serious condition. The president of the club, António Correia, said that the player is in intensive care "in a very serious situation but considered stable, with a ‘reserved’ prognosis."
Correia said that Tavinho suffered two stab wounds, “one of which was very deep, because it almost reached the lung."
The assault happened after an argument with a man who has been identified and now is being sought by the police.
The pavement outside the bar was spattered with blood. A knife was found in the parking area to the rear of the bar.
Tavinho, from Almancil, is one of SC Faro’s most competent players, having been selected for every game so far this season.
