This March has been the wettest for nearly 20 years - and it’s about to get wetter as the southern section of 'depression Hugo' hits Portugal over the weekend.
High seas, winds gusting to 80 kmph and plenty of rain is forecast, worse in the north than the south as Hugo is heading from the Azores to Galicia - but rain is expected across the mainland until Sunday with the Algarve missing the worst..
Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon are all on high alert and people are advised to stay away from beaches, coastal cliff-tops and coastal roads until the foul weather has passed. Waves along the west coast at times will reach 12 metres, peak to trough.
In the Algarve, the weather will be worst on Friday night, with high winds easing off by Saturday, but rainy periods are predicted.
On Sunday, expect showers on and off all day but the hope is for sunny intervals rather than totally great skies.
