Argentina ordered the British flag to be taken down from a cruise liner when it docked in Buenos Aires.
The captain of Cunard’s Queen Victoria was threatened with a hefty fine if he continued to fly the red ensign, the British merchant fleet flag, while in port.
The captain said privately that he was also told there would be “trouble” if he did not comply.
The Foreign Office said that “This appears to be another example of unacceptable harassment and intimidation”. It also said it would raise the matter with the Argentine authorities.
Argentina’s bold claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands has led to a series of threats and confrontations orchestrated by Buenos Aires as it tries to garner support for its cause.
