Security failure at Portugal's Eurovision 2018

eurovision2018The UK Eurovision entry came third from bottom, despite singer SuRie having her microphone grabbed by a stage invader during her performance.  She later resumed her song and finished - to applause.

Portugal's entry from Cláudia Pascoal came last of 26 entries in the annual contest which was won by Israel.

The stage intruder, carrying a backpack, dressed in a black and red bandana and slogan T-shirt promoting a book, was arrested by police shortly after he was wrestled from the stage by security guards after interrupting the performance.

Shouting “Nazis of the UK media,” “We demand freedom,” the intruder's actions were followed up with a response from the European Broadcasting Union, which operates Eurovision,

“The EBU regrets a stage invasion took place during the United Kingdom’s performance at the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final in Lisbon this evening.

“The person responsible is currently in police custody.

“The UK singer SuRie and her team were offered the option to sing again but decided not to because they were extremely proud of her performance and have decided that there is absolutely no reason to perform the song again.”

The entry from Israel's, Netta, won the contest with her song TOY, featuring a chicken dance.

Cláudia Pascoal, 23, from Gondomar represented Portugal with the song 'O Jardim,' a pop ballad with lyrics in Portuguese which was written by Cláudia’s fellow singer Isaura.

Winner of Eurovision 2017, Portugal's Salvador Sobral, handed the trophy to the Israeli singer, Netta, who will have the same honour in 2019.

The security failure at the Altice Areana is being downplayed in the media but represented a potentially devastating blow for Portugal's image as a safe and secure country, untroubled by acts of terrorism.

The fact that someone wearting a backpack could find an opportunity to rush the stage during a live broadcast will have triggered questions in government and leaves security chiefs scrabbling for answers.

...and the winner is, Netta...
