Joaquim Lara Pinto, the Brazilian suspect in the murder of Algarve schoolboy Rodrigo Lapa, has been charged with his murder.Rodrigo, 15, disappeared on February 22, 2016 in Lagoa, and was found a week later just 100 metres from his home in Malheiro, Portimão. He had been severely battered and asphyxiated.
Joaquim Lara Pinto lived with Rodrigo’s mother, Célia Barreto and flew to Brazil on the day the teenager had been reported missing.
As there is no extradition treaty between Brazil and Portugal, the case will be transferred to Brazil where Pinto will face trial for murder.
The Public Ministry said today that the process will be sent to Brazil at the request of the Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office and with the consent of the Portuguese criminal investigating judge.
Pinto can now be re-arrested in Brazil, formally charged and sent for trial.
After being heard by the judicial police of Portimão, Célia Barreto, confessed that she witnessed aggression suffered by Rodrigo and that she heard her son’s cries on the day of the disappearance.
