Lagoa council, having defined and approved an 'urban rehabilitation area' in the city at the end of February, now has approved several further areas in the municipality to safeguard local heritage.
Carvoeiro, Estômbar, Ferragudo, Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Calvário, Parchal and Porches now have designated urban rehabilitation areas.
According Lagoa Mayor, Francisco Martins, "this measure, applied in the main urban clusters of the county, reveals the need for the municipality to gather together a set of interventions and investments to ensure the safeguard of the built heritage and the sustainable development of the municipality."
Lagoa Council stated also that there are "a set of tax benefits" associated with each of the areas, which the owners of the buildings can access if they choose to renovate their property.
Lagoa is noted for its bright red tarmac in the historic area near the old market and for the approval of a new supermarket on the Alagoas Brancas freshwater wetlands that gave the city its name.
