A Spanish tourist fell off a cliff near Algar Seco, Carvoeiro on Sunday, June 24, despite a wooden walkway and safety railing running along the clifftop.
The 52-year-old man was treated at the scene by an emergency medical team and was rescued by lifeboat and taken to a waiting ambulance.
On Sunday, at 10:45 am, the Maritime Police in Portimão received the call that someone had fallen off the cliff.
Upon arrival at the scene, the rescue team had to stabilise the victim, who they suspected had sustained broken ribs, before transferring him to Portimão Hospital via the Ferragudo lifeboat.
The National Maritime Authority, which coordinated the operation, warned people to stick to the walkways along the clifftops as these have safety rails – to wander closer to the edge is dangerous, as has been seen.
