Parliament approves new Central Algarve Hospital for the third time

nurseImproved medical care in the Algarve is a step closer to happening with parliament today approving a draft resolution for the construction of a Central Hospital of the Algarve and a serious upgrade for Lagos Hospital.

These parliamentary initiatives from the Communist Party and the Left Bloc were debated and approved on Friday, June 29th.

The draft resolution for the construction of the Central Hospital of the Algarve recommended that the Government initiates 'the necessary procedures' to start this process in 2018.

This Central hospital, on a site near the white elephant football stadium between Faro and Loulé, formally has been launched twice already by politicians keen to be photographed smiling, with spade in hand.

The second project, to equip Lagos Hospital with new facilities, starting this year, also was approved but there will be no available budget this year for either project.

Another proposal, "for the improvement of public hospital health care in the Algarve," attracted favourable votes from all MPs except the ruling socialist MPs who abstained en masse, with the notable exceptions of Jamila Madeira, Ana Passos, Luís Graça and Fernando Anastácio who all voted in favour in a stubborn move that may shorten their parliamentary careers.

These draft resolutions do not mean much and usually peter out when people stop complaining.
