As the summer season draws to a close, the Algarve regions’ hotels finally have agreed to pay a long overdue increase in wages and subsidy rates for their staff.
In the Labour and Employment Bulletin a review of the Collective Labour Agreement for Hotels in the Algarve was published after it was signed with the Algarve Association for the Hospitality Industry.
According to the Trade Union, the agreed wage scale including an average wage increase of 3%, has been in effect since January 1, 2018, and must be paid retroactively within 90 days.
Workers also should benefit from a food subsidy of €50,00-a-month, a 50% increase in night work allowance, a 200% increase in wages of staff have to work on their day off or on a holiday and a €23 per month language allowance for French, English or German speakers, plus some other improvements in conditions.
With the 3% uplift in salary and the value of the food subsidy, the union said in a statement, "that there has been a further step in the replacement of part of the income lost by workers in recent years."
