Portugal’s ‘Route 66’ Passport now on sale

Route66PassportThe longest road in Europe, Portugal’s EN2 from Faro in the Algarve to Chaves in the far north, passes through São Brás de Alportel where a new ‘passport’ is now for sale.

The Association of Municipalities of the EN2 is keen to encourage national and foreign tourists to drive along the 738.5 kilometres, stopping off along the way to get their special passport stamped while enjoying the drive and frequent stops in the 36 council areas traversed.

The Association claims that the EN2 is the third longest road in the world, beaten only by the famous Route 66 in the United States and Route 40 in Argentina.*

The new passports are for sale for an entirely reasonable €1.00 at the São Brás de Alportel Council office and at the Tourist Information Point in the local Arts and Crafts Centre.

* An astute reader points out that "European route E 40 is the longest European route, more than 8,000 kilometres (4,971 miles) long, connecting Calais in France via Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan, with Ridder in Kazakhstan near the border with Russia and China." Thanks for the update, however this road was discounted as Ridder is not in Europe.

There's also the E45 in Sweden that appears to qualify, being in Europe...
