A German man has been rescued from a watery death off an unsupervised beach on the Ria Formosa island of Culatra.
The 61-year-old tourist was swimming off the eastern tip of the island on Sunday in an area notorious for its strong currents.
The man received first aid from a Portuguese Red Cross team. The the local lifeboat sped to the scene and he was treated on board by INEM medics.
The man was conscious when the lifeboat arrived in Olhão docks and he was taken by ambulance to Faro hospital.
Earlier this month, another German holidaymaker was not so lucky when he got into trouble swimming off Fuseta-Mar beach, on the ocean side of the neigbouring Armona island.
Despite first aid from by lifeguards, after being pulled unconscious from the sea, he later died in Faro Hospital.
