Silves alcoholic accused of beating his friend to death

PJBadgeThe Silves Police arrested and detained the man they suspect of killing José Martins Nunes with whom he lived in Silves near the Arade river.

Nunes, 57, known locally as 'Zé Prego', was found with five deep head wounds on the morning of September 1st, 2018.

The forensic lab has produced evidence that points to 58-year-old João Carrilho who now is, "strongly suspected" of being the killer, according to the PJ report.

The fatal attack was committed "inside the dwelling itself," which the victim and his attacker shared, “in a state of poverty, chronic alcoholism and conflict."

"The suspect repeatedly hit the victim over the head with a club, causing him serious blunt trauma injuries that led to his death," the PJ investigators claim.

The accused then dragged the victim to a water tank with the aim of heaving him into it, so as to hide the body, but he was unable to complete the task.

Shortly after the events of September 1st, João Carrilho was questioned by Police investigators. He assured them that he had left the house before José Nunes that day and had not opened his door or disturbed him because Nunes, "used to go to sleep at around 06:00."

Carrillho said he was "surprised" when the GNR informed him of his friend's death.

According to João Carrilho, the victim used to "drink a load of wine before going to help cars park next to the church," and usually got home at around dawn.

The unemployed suspect already has been in court for his first hearing and will await trial in the safety of a cell.
