There already have been more than 10,000 accidents registered on the Algarve's roads this year.
This is the second year running that the 10,000-accident barrier has been exceeded with the December 15th tally of 10,257 comfortably over the line.
The data from the National Road Safety Authority, an enduring misnomer, shows that on average there have been 30 road accidents-a-day registered in the Algarve region.
The accident level may be level but the number of fatalities has gone up over last year with 39 people meeting the end on the regional road network.
This figure is 11 up on last year, 39%, and that was to the middle of December so there are a few dangerous days left to go before the year-end.
As for serious injuries, 189 have been recorded this year, two more than during the 12 months of 2017.
